Poster thumbnail image for MELT – A Climate Conversation with Denver Digerati
Saturday, September 14, 2024
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Join us in the Infinity Theater with Denver Digerati to present the World Premiere of MELT – The Memory of Ice. Witness this exploration of our changing planet through the lens of local filmmaker, Betsey Biggs, Ph.D. After the film, we have the honor of welcoming Richard Nunn - the Assistant Curator and database manager of the National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) to discuss the importance of this work and the incredible lessons that ice can teach us.

Presented exclusively at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, this evening is presented in conjunction with the 9th Annual Digerati Experimental Media Festival. We are honored and excited to collaborate with Denver Digerati to screen this immersive world premiere.

MELT: The Memory of Ice is a minimalist cinematic song cycle for singers, electronic music, and film, a personal reckoning with the earth’s body changing, melting, and spilling as global warming melts our ice caps and threatens winter. MELT’s sounds, images and texts are drawn from four weeks with the director's mother and young daughter exploring the Greenland Ice Sheet and the world’s most actively melting glacier, the Jakobshavn Glacier in Ilulissat, Greenland, as well as from personal and archival materials.

We can’t wait to see you at the Museum!

Poster thumbnail image for Snake Venoms: From Deadly Toxins To Life-Saving Therapeutics
Monday, September 16, 2024
7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Presented by Dr. Stephen P. Mackessy, Ph.D – Department of Biological Sciences, University of Northern Colorado – Mackessy Venom Analysis Lab

*Live Snakes will be presented at this lecture.*

Venoms have evolved among thousands of animals worldwide, but venomous snakes have particularly captivated our attention, initially as a serious risk to human life and limb. As we have dissected the components of venoms and studied their actions, we have realized that these toxins are not novel poisons – rather, they are “rogue” modulators of normal body functions, such as nerve transmission, muscle contraction, blood clot formation and other processes. We are honored to welcome Dr. Stephen Mackessy to discuss their work in this field, specifically working with snakes that produce venoms, as well as some of the novel ways that research is providing new tools for fighting envenomation, and how snake venom toxins are being put to use as human therapeutic drugs.
To complement this experience, visit the Museum's newest temporary exhibition, "The Power of Poison," now open to the public. This exhibition explores the captivating and often paradoxical world of nature’s toxic arsenal through live performances and interactive dioramas. This spellbinding exhibition will take you into familiar and novel tales of illness, enchantment and death by poison. Whether as a defense against predators, a source of magical strength or a lifesaving medical treatment, “The Power of Poison” is sure to surprise you at every turn.
We can’t wait to see you at the Museum!
