Educate and Conservate - an outdoor learning retreat
Workshop for K-5 Educators
Come explore the great outdoors with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science at the Bluff Lake Nature Center. Located in the heart of Denver, this incredible urban wildlife refuge is the perfect place to inspire and inform your teaching practice with the wonders of the natural world. Together we will dig deep into phenomena related to animal adaptations, ecosystem biodiversity, and the identification of habitats. Participants will walk away with ready-to-use activities that can be replicated in a schoolyard, local park or even on a street corner in your own community!
About Bluff Lake
Previously the site of Denver’s Stapleton Airport, Bluff Lake was once riddled with chemical runoff due to the de-icing of airplanes. In 1994 the City of Denver invested in the revitalization and restoration of this remarkable, 123-acre piece of land. Today the Nature Center features an abundance of wildlife, an interpretive trail system and outdoor classrooms for youth and adults alike.
While this professional learning experience is centered on science methods for elementary educators, a strong current of conservation and preservation will be threaded throughout. This event is the first of what we hope to be many collaborations with Denver’s only nonprofit nature center.
Register today and together we will…
- Identify phenomena and collaboratively carry out investigations that produce data and drive our explanations.
- Ask questions and record observations about the patterns and relationships we find in nature.
- Construct and share arguments from evidence using engaging activities that cultivate a respectful and supportive learning environment.
- Explore the nuanced but often simple ways Science can be threaded throughout other content areas like Math, Literacy and the Arts.
- Earn seven ‘clock hours’ which can be submitted for your state re-licensure credit or district credit.
