Amazon Voyage: Vicious Fishes & Other Riches

Take an incredible voyage down the world's largest and most biologically diverse river. Dare to get an up-close look at this mysterious world. Learn about amazing creatures, including piranhas, anacondas, caimans, and stingrays. Experience live animals, original artifacts, dance, music, demonstrations, and more in this interactive, bilingual exhibition. Encounter field researchers making incredible new discoveries, plus become a scientist and make your own fun, hands-on discoveries.  Participate in this amazing celebration of the Amazon and investigate the scientific, social, and economic choices that shape the river's future.

The Camera that Saved Hubble
FREE with Museum admission
The Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, WFPC2, is on display for a limited time at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.  The supercamera, which is the size of a baby grand piano, is credited with saving the Hubble Space Telescope mission and providing unprecedented and crystal clear pictures of our universe for the last 16 years. Museum visitors will have a unique opportunity to see this remarkable scientific instrument, complete with several "craters" in its outer skin that were caused by micrometeorite impacts during its years in orbit.

Hubble - Now in 3D
Experience a gripping story full of hope, crushing disappointment, dazzling ingenuity, bravery, and triumph. Hubble recounts the amazing journey of the Hubble Space Telescope, arguably the most important scientific instrument since Galileo's original telescope and the greatest success in space since the moon landing. Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, Hubble will change the way you see the universe.  Showing daily at 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m., with an additional showing at 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Under the Sea - Now in 3D
Visit exotic and isolated underwater locations, including southern Australia and New Guinea, and encounter some of the most mysterious and stunning creatures of the sea.  Explore the natural wonder of the oceans and see the impact of global climate change in this 3D adventure, which is narrated by Jim Carrey. Showing daily at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., with an additional showing at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

PLANETARIUM

Journey to the Stars
The Museum's newest planetarium show features stunning images from space and ground telescopes, in addition to never-before-seen visualizations and innovative physics-based simulations.  Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, Journey to the Stars launches viewers through space and time to experience the life and death of the stars in our sky, including our own nurturing sun.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

Where Pink Dolphins Swim: Photographs from an Amazon Journey, by Tory Read

View the Brazilian Amazon and its people in this photography exhibit by fine art photographer Tory Read. More than 30 black-and-white images tell the documentary story of a journey down the river, and eight large-format color pinhole images convey a dreamlike impression of life along the river. Explore the natural environment, human society and culture on the river, and the contact zone between North Americans and the river's people.

Science Lounge: The Science of Beer

Enjoy a mind-expanding experience with cocktails and entertainment every third Thursday of the month. Ages 21 and up. This month, celebrate National Chemistry Week by learning about the natural history and chemistry of the almighty ale.  Also on tap, The Big Motif, a up-and-coming band from Colorado that plays a mixture of experimental blues, psychedelic rock, reggae, and jazz. 

Amazon Voyage Behind-the-Scenes Tour
Monday, October 25, 6 p.m. - $20 member, $25 nonmember
There was once a rain forest in Castle Rock, Colorado, and Museum Chief Curator Kirk Johnson, PhD, is the scientist who made this significant discovery! Johnson reached this conclusion by comparing fossil leaves and modern rain forest leaves. He'll offer a special tour of Amazon Voyage as he discusses his contributions to the exhibition and introduces his favorite characters, Captain Mo and artist Ray Troll.

Live Bats! (Adults 21+ only)
Thursday, October 28, 7 p.m. - $8 member, $10 nonmember (21+ only)
The bats are back, featuring Rob Mies, conservation biologist, author, and director of the Organization for Bat Conservation. Meet an international delegation of some of the rarest bats in the world, including a gigantic flying fox bat from Malaysia with a nearly six-foot wingspan. Enjoy an adults-only evening with snacks and bat-inspired drinks at the cash bar.

Get in the Halloween spirit! Rob Mies, conservation biologist, author, and director of the Organization for Bat Conservation introduces an international delegation of some of the rarest bats in the world, including a gigantic flying fox bat from Malaysia with a nearly six-foot wingspan! Join in the unbridled enthusiasm as the kids clamor for the best view. Costumes are welcomed.

Digital Earth: Explore the World from Space

With space scientist Ka Chun Yu, PhD, as your driver and geologist Bob Raynolds, PhD, as your guide, embark on an amazing tour of Earth from the vantage of a satellite in space. On this ride, investigate the patterns and trends of energy resource distribution worldwide.

Live Samba Music and the Amazon Voyage Exhibit

Listen to live Brazilian music from Sambadende and experience Amazon Voyage: Vicious Fishes & Other Riches. Take a fascinating voyage down the world's largest and most biologically diverse river and meet amazing creatures-piranhas, anacondas, electric eels, stingrays, and more. Plus experience sensational samba music and make your own fish artwork. This interactive, bilingual (English-Spanish) exhibition mixes real scientific research, light humor, and whimsical artwork into a fun, interactive experience for visitors of all ages.

Colorado Skies

Enjoy an evening of science, stories, and stars with astronomer Larry Sessions as the stars of winter begin edging over the eastern horizon and as Jupiter is high overhead at midevening. See star clusters, such as the Seven Sisters or Pleiades, the Great Orion Nebula, and a crowd favorite, the beautiful Milky Way.

Dare to get an up-close look at mysterious live creatures, samba to a Brazilian band, make a piranha print, and pick your poison (venom, anyone?) at the cash bar. Along this river, truth is stranger than fiction.
